Summer Solstice!!

  20 June, 2013

“Then followed that beautiful season…Summer….
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
and the landscape lay as if new created
in all the freshness of childhood.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882)

I was experiencing the shift to summer the other evening while taking a walk in my neighborhood.  A weeping birch tree angled like an arch over the sidewalk.  Tiny English daisies formed a soft, springy carpet along a rock wall, in shades of iridescent pinks and creams.   For a few minutes, I was thankfully out of my head and floating with presence and fading half- thoughts of memories.   As my eyes adjusted to dusk, the stark contrast of light and shadow held time in suspension and there was just stillness and light.

Summer solstice is when you may feel most drawn to community and celebration.   It’s a time for deep gratitude and joy.  To celebrate and honor the solstice that occurs in the cosmos, is to allow our body and spirit to bathe in expansive and sacred energy.

Have you been to the Solstice parade in Seattle? On Sat, the 22nd in Fremont, hundreds of brave souls will paint their bodies and ride fully naked through the street on bicycles!

If you’re looking for a tamer way to celebrate the solstice, here some ideas:

Lay in the grass under an oak tree.  Oak trees symbolize the peak of life.

Harvest flowers and herbs, as they are energetically most powerful during this time.

Begin a gratitude journal.

COME TOGETHER IN COMMUNITY!

Have a bonfire on the night of the 21st .  Fire is the element of summer!
